Bringing clinical data to life
Serving more than 1.4 million patients each year, NYC Health + Hospitals relies on operational efficiency to deliver on its public mission. In the months leading up to the pandemic, the 52-year-old institution had already started modernizing its data architecture in the cloud. Key to this approach is “DnA Dash,” a one-stop resource where any city employee across 70+ locations can access data for predictive analytics, patient care, and facility management.
Obstacles to digital transformation
Data skepticism
Siloed data sources
Language barriers
Delayed time to market
Healthcare professionals had limited knowledge of existing patient and medical data assets, or how to use them effectively. There was a generalized fear and anxiety, or a lack of confidence in data.
Legacy systems required staff to manually gather data, send files, and approve access for each source, including electronic medical records (EMR), clinical information, HR profiles, and business intelligence. This laborious process hindered the sharing of critical data.
Across departments, there was often a lack of consensus about data taxonomies and catalogs. The dictionaries that did exist were incomplete, covering only specific lines of business.
Held back by fragmented data sources and manual integration, new data projects and dashboards couldn't meet the pace of urgent administrative and clinical needs.
